Slaughtered Priest: Confess your sins
26/11/12 || gk
Formed in 2007, Greece’s Slaughtered Priest has been prolific to say the least with “Confess your sins” being the bands fourth full length outing. The band has been slowly but surely carving out a place in the underground black thrash scene and this latest album is their most assured yet.
You’ll know whether you like or loathe “Confess your sins” in the first minute or so of opener “Speed metal attack”. It does what it says in the title and the classic German thrash riff that opens the song is familiar and comforting. “Order to kill” starts off with some solid riffing but really comes into its own as the song progresses and the band show off an ability to change tempo. “Nocturnal occult ceremony” starts with a mid-paced groove that feels a bit new for the band but is a pretty kickass song. “Bloodthirsty pentagram bitch” has a really catchy main riff and gang shouts that give the song a slight punk flavour. The album closes with “Demonic terror” which could have been on Desaster’s “Hellfire’s dominion” and closes the album in strong fashion.
There’s absolutely nothing new here. I guess that needs to be said. The duo of Ghoul and Ungod sound like they spend their days listening exclusively to thrash metal and it shows. There’s loads of German thrash worship here but they must have been paying attention to some American bands as well. Where Slaughtered Priest manages to succeed is in their ability to write some strong riffs and memorable songs. It’s all mostly warp speed thrash but every now and then, the band slows down to mid paced grooves and gives the album just a bit of variety.
Slaughtered Priest is a band that has basically improved with every
release. I thought last years “Serpent’s nekrowhores” was a fun slice of
blackened thrash but
“Confess your sins” has managed to surpass that album with considerable
ease. It’s all very derivative but when in the right mood, this kind of
music is also a lot of fun.
Fans of blackened thrash should find plenty to like here and the quality of riffing ensures that the album has a lasting appeal.
